Rock the Vote: Norman Mailer

In 1969 author Norman Mailer ran for in the Democratic Party primary for the mayor of New York City. He partnered with newspaper columnist Jimmy Breslin, who ran for City Council President. Their platform advocated that New York City become the 51st state in the United States, and their campaign slogan was “Throw the rascals in.” Mailer came in fourth out of five in the primary.
