Outside, 2001, creative director: Neal Boulton
Neal Boulton: “Outside magazine was a dream job for me. I felt that this was a magazine in which the design should announce: DON’T JUST LOOK, READ IT, TOO. I felt it could be accomplished by capturing each harrowing breath the outdoors enthusiast take as they pushed themselves to the limit. Thus, the photography was acutely active—and the design clean and bold. This was a magazine, unlike my work at Jazz Times, where I didn’t want design to dilute the photography or the articles. Even for me—it was spare. But the advertisers loved it and we had many giant issues.”
