The Crisis was founded in 1910 as the magazine of the NAACP. The original name of the magazine was The Crisis: A Record of the Darker Races. W.E.B. DuBois was the editor. Frank Walts was the main cover illustrator for The Crisis from 1917-1920. Walts was an African-American artist and illustrator who also did covers for The Masses and other progressive publications.
