Mente: Stylish New Indie iPad Magazine App
Mente is a stylish new design and fashion iPad magazine app created by Vasco Colombo and Raquel Porto of +2 Designers in Portugal (the text is in English). The app is filled with lots of striking design, videos, bold photographs, and includes an interview with graphic design maestro David Carson and a series of animated illustration creations by Jorge Colombo, among other goodies. The overall feel is very modern and engaging. Best of all, it’s available for free from the iPad App Store. Pictured above is a gallery of pages and images from Mente.

The Huffington iPad magazine has been publishing a series of smart, engaging covers on their weekly editions, with photo illustration imagery created predominantly in-house by designer Troy Dunham and photo researcher Wendy George. The team has been dubbed #TrendyMagic by creative director Josh Klenert, who estimates that they’ve illustrated 75% of the magazine’s recent covers. “The magazine highlights the best of the Huffington Post,” says Klenert, “which means we work on a tight production cycle (and a limited budget) that’s in tune with the speed of our website.”

My favorite magazine app is Letter to Jane. It’s a happy day today because the latest edition, Shadows, is now out. It’s a rich, senses-pleasing collection of interviews, stories, videos, photographs, and cool design, all wrapped up in a smart, modern interface. Letter to Jane creator Tim Moore has outdone himself this time around! For more information and a link to download, visit the Letter to Jane website.

The Society of Publication Designers has launched its second iPad app, SPD 46, the collection of the best magazine and publication design, illustration, and photography. It’s packed with over 600 images, in vertical and horizontal formats, with searchable database. The work represented was selected by a jury of visual journalists as the best publication design of 2010. There is a ton of amazing work here, including Magazine of the Year winner GQ. The app was designed by Huffington. magazine creative director Josh Klenert. It’s available now in the iTunes store for both iPad and iPad mini.

The Huffington. iPad magazine

Don’t sleep on the Huffington. iPad magazine! That’s my message to everyone for the holiday season. They just marked their six-month anniversary, and the now-free weekly app has become a powerful example of original tablet publishing. I’ve been doing a bunch of iPad consulting lately, and Huffington. is always the first app I point to as something that is smart, original, engaging, and fully utilizing the power of the platform. Creative director Josh Klenert and his ace team have been creating some brilliant imagery and design, tapping a stellar crew of illustrators, photographers, and infographic-makers, including talent like Ward Sutton, Brian Stauffer, Dan Winters, Christoph Niemann, Mirko Illic, Eddie Guy, Noma Bar, and many more Newmanology favorites. The cover design fuses the sensibility of gonzo altweeklies with the cool, modern, restrained look of the Dirk Barnett-era Newsweek, plus a dash of Arthur Hochstein’s pop-Photoshop Time magazine covers. I like it a lot! And it’s fun to watch the Huffington. design and look morph and mature, especially since it’s not based on an existing print publication, but is unique to the iPad platform.

The Huffington. visual team includes: Josh Klenert, creative director; Andrea Nasca, art director; Anna Dickson, photography director; Martin Gee, Troy Dunham, Eve Binder, Susana Soares, designers; Wendy George, associate photo editor; Peter Niceberg, production director.
