Liberator was founded by Max Eastman and his sister Crystal Eastman as a successor to The Masses. It published from 1918-24, although it effectively was taken over by the Communist Party in 1922.

The Masses was a socialist monthly published from 1911-1917, edited by Max Eastman. Its editors were indicted by the US government in 1917 on charges that they conspired to stop the military draft
